Google Buzz Etiquette

General, Google, Google Buzz, Social Media
I worked out some basic Buzz Etiquette yesterday. If you have any other suggestions please add it to the comments below.
- Spammers will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Do not spam!
- Make an effort to post directly to Buzz instead of dumping from Twitter, Google Reader, Flickr, Picasa, Youtube etc. (It is recommended that your Buzz posts should contain at least 90% of Buzz worthy discussions and no more than 10% Google Reader, Flickr, Picasa, Youtube, or Twitter posts).
- Active participation is essential to quality discussions. (Please do not flood the Buzz board with posts unless you plan on participating in other users posts).
- Avoid multiple posts like: I’m bored, I’m horny, I just took a dump or I’m eating a sandwich. Note: Some posts are fine without attending to comments, an example would be status updates but please keep them at a minimum.
- Avoid posting short questions to often, such as: Whats color underwear is your mom wearing? Unless there is a purpose for the question, if so you should state why your asking the question.
- Avoid topics related to racism and hate.
- Please respect other people’s beliefs.
- Unless absolutely necessary, try to keep Buzz posts at a minimal length. Even though we have no limit on comments or posts most people do not want to read something that is 500 words long when 140 words will do the job.
- People tend to get irritated when their posts get hijacked, so do your best to stay on topic. Michelle Marie™ and Had3nx are excluded from this rule.
- Add some humor to your posts and comments! We all love a good laugh now and then.
- When giving a critique on a topic, artwork or writing, make sure it is constructive criticism.
- If you have a Buzz idea, please submit it to the Google Buzz moderator.

It all sounds reasonable until I realise that what you're asking me to do is disconnect other services from Buzz, services that I use to share things with (like Reader). Why should I bother cutting and pasting links and writing comments twice?
That's why I cut way back on Facebook and Twitter. Buzz was better because I could reach multiple communities at once with things that I hope will find commenters.

Great work guys! I would suggest you use numbers instead of bullet points, so in subsequent discussions we can refer to Google Buzz Etiquette Suggestion #4 (GBES#4), as opposed to "that one that is third up from the bottom". Make sense?

those all sound like a great place to start. can we now list the variety of amusing and archaic punishments this rule system has for offenders? I like tar and feathering, forced pokemon appreciation, or non-stop pog collecting.

@Betsy Great suggestion. Don't you think people will think that since an item is number 1 that it is more important than item number 2? This list is not in priority, just the order that we wrote them.

@Larry Anderson I do agree that these are picky and they rules can be broken when done so properly, but they outline the problems as well as the solutions.

This is a good one and should be added to the list: 5. Enable your custom profile URL so people can @-reply you.

Seriously, guys? We don't have to read anything we don't want to hear. Nothing is directed into our stream unless we request it. Part of what makes these social networks fun and useful is that there are no hard rules associated with them. We are free to use them as we wish. I understand that there are certain protocols that you guys follow but to publish them as a manifesto kind of reeks of elitism. One of the major benefits of this "new media" is that we are all on equal footing. Celebrities, real or imagined, of old or new media don't necessarily have any more clout than the guy who just signed up for the service.
Just follow Google's lead, "Don't be evil"

Larry: I go through my followers daily and make sure everyone is enabled to comment on things coming from Reader (since it's their comments that I want to see).
Antonio: Thank you. Social media are a shower constantly falling on us … not a bath where we figured out what to put in the water, then soak in just that.
Cassius: Surely the appropriate punishment is to have to find and post something that would interest all of us?

@***** we aren't trying to be elitists, we are merely trying to eliminate a lot of the noise inside of Buzz. These are not set in stone by any means, we just put down some ideas. We want your input on it too. We want this to be something that we all agree on. If you have some suggestions like @Larry Anderson then please post them. Once we all collaborate on things that we like and don't like on Buzz we can share these ideas/Etiquette with new friends and family.

I'm not a big fan of internet guidelines/etiquette standards in general. Although I wholeheartedly agree with some of these, there are others that I could care less about. I think most people have their own personal guidelines in their head, and will just un-follow/block as necessary.
The medium just seems to vast and fluid to me, it's not like a posting forum where guidelines are common and membership is controlled.
But as far as a suggestion goes, I'd say if you post, try to post consistently. Don't disappear for 2 weeks then come in one day and post 20 things.

Thank you @Larry Anderson I for one respect your opinion very much, you are giving constructive criticism which helps. We made these more detailed/nit picky to get the point across. We want others to give opinions like you have done and make this something that is useful.
I know I am not perfect and sometimes my posts suck. I get that, and I know other people feel the same way. I love the internet for it's openness and the ability for us to share what we are thinking, when we are thinking it.
I have already made changes based on peoples criticism here and I will do so until we all get something that we find useful to share with others(or not if you feel that way).
Here is an updated list:
1. Do not spam!

2. Wherever possible, post in a way that enables comments (e.g., post via bookmarklet directly in Buzz rather than through Reader, which limits comments
3. Active participation is essential to quality discussions.
4. Avoid multiple posts like: I'm bored, I’m horny, I just took a dump or I’m eating a sandwich.
5. Avoid posting short questions to often
6. Avoid topics related to racism and hate.
7. Respect othes.
8. Converse, don't broadcast
9. People tend to get irritated when their posts get hijacked, so do your best to stay on topic.
10. Add some humor to your posts and comments! We all love a good laugh now and then.
11. When giving a critique on a topic, artwork or writing, make sure it is constructive criticism.
12. Enable your custom profile URL so people can @-reply you.
13. If you have a Buzz idea, please submit it to the Google Buzz moderator.

I'm eating a sandwich. (See that! I just broke rule number 4 but at the same time fulfilled #10 and added some humor!)

@Kirk rules are made to be broken, we all know that. Like I said, I know some of my posts suck and break these rules and I will continue to have some sucky posts, that's just me. I do however try to share technology and interesting ideas when I can and I try to make things interesting where people want to discuss it or they find the information useful (which is usually sticking to some, but not all of these ideas).

You post quality shit and I'm very fussy about whom I follow, so just keep up the good work.
And if my pointless attempts at comment humor ever result in a hijack, I apologize in advance.

How do you "enable your custom profile URL"?

This comment was originally posted on Google Buzz.

Go to your google.com/profile and go to "Edit Profile" located in the top right. From within the settings select to use your username as your Profile URL, vs using a number.

Good idea, nice discussion. Can't be rules though, because there's no way to enforce.

More like The Pirate Code. … more in the nature of guidelines. Arrrrr

Just because I 'liked' this post doesn't mean I really 'like' it – I don't like rules either, I'm with Rainy, I didn't read the rules, but I do read everything else that you post. (Well some of it.)
