Recently Evernote came out with a great feature called the “Trunk”. This feature is basically an app store for Evernote. Well if you have an iPad, mobile phone, netbook or any other kind of mobile device you probably can’t get access to the Trunk, or if you can it is limited due to the size of your device.

As of this morning I found a way to get around that issue. If you go to http://www.evernote.com/about/trunk/

You get full access to the Trunk and all of it’s features on any web enabled device.

Being a web developer I use many websites on a daily basis, some for my social needs like Google Buzz, Twitter, Facebook and even Youtube and others for News, like Google Reader, NY Times and the local TV news. What do these sites have in common? Almost all of them have no way for a general user to comment on a feature, make suggestions or report a bug.

Why is this important you ask?
If you own a website, aren’t you busy writing articles, improving the tools on your site or even thinking of a new design or layout? Sure you are, I know I am. Doing these things are great for your website as they help your company grow in the direction that you want your company to grow, but what about how your users want or need your company to grow for them? How can you connect to your users? How can your users connect with you? How can your users help you out when you make a mistake, there will always be a mistake, no one is perfect.

Some people may say that this is what Facebook, Twitter or Buzz is used for, and to some extent they are right, but do you read every comment, every post on those services? Probably not.

How to let your users communicate with you:
There are many ways that you can get real and honest feedback from your users about your website. Below you will find a few useful tools/methods that I would recommend:

Twitter with Hash tags – On your “Contact Us” section of your website add a statement or two to recommend your user to send you a twitter post using some basic has tags.

#Bug – Used when your users needs to share a bug on your website

#Suggestion – Used when your users wants suggest a new feature, an article or anything else

#Help – If your user needs help about something related to your website

#Spam – If you allow comments on your website, this will let users help if they spot a spam comment on your website

#Critique – If you have a user who wants to vent about your site or just let you know how they feel about a certain feature or article this is the easiest way for them to do so, 140 characters at a time

Create a forum on your site which can be found easily such as forum.yourwebsite.com or yourwebsite.com/forum

Create 6 categories:

Suggestions

Help

Critique

Bug Report

Spam

Other

Encourage your users to use Google Side Wiki

Add a link for users to download Google Sidewiki

Have a section showing all Google Sidewiki Posts (The good and the bad)

Create a comboniation of support methods like TweetDeck – http://support.tweetdeck.com/home

The Goal:
Your users are a great source of inspiration, guidence and they help keep both you and your company honest. Reach out to them and give them the services they want and they will reach out and bring more users to your site.

Since I run my own freelance business from home I have to be very careful with all of my receipts to make sure that I am good when it comes to tax season.

At first I kept an accordion folder with all of my receipts, but this became very messy during tax season because some receipts would get really worn down, others were in the wrong month slot and if I ever mixed any of them up it made it even worse. I needed a new method and last year I turned to my trusted Evernote to see if it could do the job.

I started to scan or email a few of my receipts for 2009 directly into Evernote, as the year progressed I started to fine-tune the tags I used and it started to become more useful.

Now a year later Evernote has become my go to storage location for all of my receipts.

How I organize my receipts in Evernote:

I scan every receipt and put them into a specific folder labeled “Receipts”.

If I have an Emailed version of a receipt, like iTunes then I will forward it directly to myspecial Evernote email address and append “@Receipts” to the end of the subject line to have it automatically get sent into my Receipts notebook.

If the receipt is for my business I tag it “Heka Interactive” (the name of my company) and then I add any tags that may fit for that receipt.

When April rolls around it is time to give my accountant a copy of all of my receipts.

Option 1: Email each receipt to your accountant, one by one

Option 2: Select multiple notes on the desktop client and e-mail a batch of receipt to your accountant

Option 3: Select multiple notes on the desktop client, choose print and select Adobe PDF as your printer. This will save your notes to a PDF then you can add all receipts to a cd or thumb drive and give them to your accountant

Option 4: A more organize option is to use option 1, 2 or 3 and actually send your account your receipts at the end of the month. This does two things for you:

It makes your account happy because she is not swamped in April

It makes it possible to figure out how much you will owe when tax seasons comes around

I started using Google Buzz about a month ago and from the very beginning I wanted to share articles with other readers. Sometimes the articles I wanted to share would only show up in my Buzz stream. Google Buzz is still new so there is no standard way to repost an article, since there is no standard way I talked with a few Buzz users about reposting etiquette.

After some great discussions we came up with some Buzz reposting etiquette.

Step 1. The word “via” at the beginning to tell you that it is a repost.
Step 2. @username so that we know who originally posted the article
Step 3. Where it was reposted from
Step 4. New line
Step 5. Paste text from the original post
Step 6. Paste Buzz URL from original post

Here is what a proper repost should look like:

With the rise of social media and live content comes to the rise of what I like to call “Social Media Anxiety”. I personally read blogs, websites and Twitter each and everyday. Some days I can read well over 100 blog posts and thousands of Twitter posts when there is a new web tool, international issue, strong political change or a tech gadget. This made me think about how the rise of information and the rise of stress and how they happen to be correlated with each other.

Ways to cut back on stress on anxiety:

Remove all spammy posters from the people you follow on Twitter, Buzz and Facebook

Organize your blogs that you follow into two simple categories: “Filler” and “Must Read”

Use tools to organize your social media streams to cut down on the number of places you have to look for content: A few suggestions are Tweetdeck for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace. Google Reader for All blogs and websites with RSS Feeds

Limit the number of Twitter Updates in Tweetdeck to only 100 posts per column

Remove RSS feeds from sites who posts numerous times a day that you are unable to keep up with

Skim over articles and only read the important ones, don’t try to read all of them

Turn off all notifiers, and post count to posts, this guts down on having to look at new posts as soon as they come out

Limit the amount of notifications to your phone to either a few a day or none at all

Turn off email notifications, and don’t check your email for the first 2 hours of work

Limit the amount of time that you spend on social media a day. Set a time limit and stick to it

So this got me to thinking, over the past couple of years we are seeing more automated options in the public restrooms and this made me ask the question: Why isn’t the toilet paper automated?

You have to admit, the toilet paper in a public restroom is pretty gross when you think about it. Since technology is taking off at a rapid pace in our homes and with many businesses, I think that in the next 2-5 years you will start to see an automated toilet paper dispenser in public restrooms.

The next questions is, how many squares will you get? 3, 4, 5? Who knows, but it should limit the amount of germs gathered from using a public restroom.

This past year I have been getting busier and the amount of work that I have, has more then doubled. I needed to come up with a solution that would allow me to manage my daily tasks of running a web business and
having to be at multiple places.

Here are some of the problems that I ran into:

Needed to answer business emails on the go

Needed access to all of my clients files on the go

Internet goes down at home and I still needed to meet a deadline

Needed a clients name and address while I was at the post office

Needed a secure storage solution for Passwords

Needed access to my notes where ever I go, making the notes actually usable.

Wanted to be able to search through my notes (It would be nice to search through PDF’s and images)

Needed Automatic file backup in case of hard drive failure

Wanted an easy way to backup photos taken on my phone during a meeting

Needed to access my chat logs from multiple computers and iPhone

Needed to access to thousands of bookmarks on any browser and my iPhone

Needed to track time spent on a project from multiple computers and iPhone

Wanted to view a website that’s on my computer, on my iPhone with limited effort. And Vice Versa

Needed to make a To Do task/checklist when an idea or task is mentioned or comes to mind

Needed to send files to a client while out of the office

Wanted a business phone number that I can use with any phone

The list is pretty big as you can see and these are only the tip of the ice berg of the things I needed. Basically it came down to; I need to have everything with me, wherever I go, all of the time.

After I did some research and plenty of testing(nearly 6 months and hundreds of tools) with trial and errors I came to use the following tools which allow me to work from anywhere.

Bookmarks

Notes (text, audio, video, images and PDF’s)

Business checklists from Notes

Website from PC to Phone instantly

FREE or $5/month

Secure passwords and notes

Send a password to email

FREE for $1/month

In one of my previous posts Backing up with Windows 7 I showed the error message I was given during each backup attempt. Some of the articles I found online told me to run disk defragmentor, scan disk, clean my registry, delete extra users, modify my registies but none of them or I ever thought of the simplest approach; Create the missing folder. So last night I thought, Hey why don’t I just create the stupid folder it keeps looking for. So I did and then I ran the smallest backup I could, and it worked!. So I decided to try a full backup, hoping it would work and after 30 minutes the backup completed successfully.

For others who may have had or come across this problem see below where I show the location of where I created this new folder.

I navigated my way on my computer to
C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\ Once I was there I created a new folder called "Documents" with a capital 'D'. Once that was created I restarted my computer and ran scan disk, just to be safe. Once that was completed I ran my backup., and everything worked like it should.

Note: You must be logged in as an administrator to create the folder in that location mentioned above.

After cleaning up my 1TB drive I have gotten the backup to go as far as 97% without a problem, Once it hits the 97% complete I get the following message:

Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Documents. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))

Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I would really like to backup my files with my external drive.
